The Judges' Education section is intended to serve as an educational tool for judges, breeders and exhibitors to help form a correct image of the "perfect" Manchester Terrier and to promote a better understanding of and appreciation for the breed standard of the Manchester Terrier. We hope is site will serve as a guide in interpreting that standard.

It is our objective to welcome and provide a place for AKC judges education to the Manchester Terrier.  The Judges Education Committee of the AMTC is pleased to make available to all approved, new and prospective AKC Judges whatever information they may be searching for with regard to judging the Manchester Terrier Dog. We welcome the opportunity to provide seminars and Judge's Breed Study groups upon request. If you do not find what you are looking for or have further question, please do not hesitate to contact or work with any of our Committee Members.

The Judges Education Committee is dedicated to formulating effective, reliable and objective breed presentations to aspiring, provisional, and approved Manchester Terrier Dog Judges. The goal of the AMTC is to hold and support presentations in various areas of the United States in order to facilitate the needs of judges, with the end result of better educated judges able to assess our breed.

Breeders and judges should both emphasize the positive. Breeders have the responsibility to try to breed Manchester Terrier's as described by the standard. Judges must find and place those dogs that best represent the qualities called for in the standard. Breeders and Judges both must consider the whole dog, not overemphasizing any one part. Reward the virtues and penalize faults to the extent of the deviation from the ideal.

We offer Ringside Mentoring in conjunction with presentations that are given at Specialties and Regional Specialties. If at all possible, we will gladly make ringside mentoring available when requested.  The purpose of the ringside mentoring session is to provide the student judges an opportunity to observe a large number of dogs in a short amount of time and to allow them to realize the diversity of “type” within the breed which is acceptable under the AKC Manchester Terrier Standard.

During the ringside tutoring session, mentors will:

  • Provide immediate feedback on observations made by the student-judges on dogs in the ring;
  • Assist the student judges in interpreting and applying the Standard through explanation and observation;
  • Be thoroughly familiar with the AKC Standard for the Manchester Terrier and be able to justify all observations with standard-specific language.

The purpose of the ringside mentoring session is to provide the student judges an opportunity to observe a large number of dogs in a short amount of time and to allow them to realize the diversity of “type” within the breed which is acceptable under the AKC Manchester Terrier Standard.

It is vitally important that the mentors who assist in the ringside tutoring session present the breed in a positive manner to the student judges. In order to do this they must be willing to be objective and avoid any impression of “lobbying” for a certain type.

During the ringside tutoring session, mentors will:

  • provide immediate feedback on observations made by the student-judges on dogs in the ring;
  • Assist the student judges in interpreting and applying the Standard through explanation and observation;
  • Be thoroughly familiar with the AKC Standard for the Manchester Terrier and be able to justify all observations with Standard-specific language.

We encourage all AMTC Judges to attend one or more programs to see our breed performing. This will give the judge a better insight into the reasons for the conformation requirements as specified in our breed standard.
